Understanding Your Skin Barrier

The outermost layer of your skin does quiet, constant work. Here is what it does and why routines often succeed or fail because of it.

The skin barrier is the outermost part of the epidermis. It holds moisture in and keeps irritants out, and most of the time you notice it only when it stops working well.

Why it matters

When the barrier is compromised, skin can feel tight, sting with familiar products or become reactive to things it previously tolerated. Many routines fail not because the individual products are wrong, but because the barrier was not in a condition to accept them.

Supporting it

Gentle cleansing, consistent moisturising and restraint with active ingredients are the foundation. Adding one change at a time makes it far easier to identify what helps.

When to ask

If irritation persists despite simplifying your routine, it is reasonable to bring it to a dermatology visit rather than continue experimenting.
